The Fourth edition of Mayo Clinic Cardiology: Concise Textbook continues the tradition of all previous editions: a succinct yet comprehensive teaching and learning textbook rather than an overwhelming reference work. This new edition continues to bridge the gap between currently available texts: more than a bare-bones compilations of lists of facts that do not address the fundamental concepts of the practice of cardiology and not so encyclopedic a tome that it goes into the minute detail of a traditional reference work.
Organized to present a comprehensive overview of the field of cardiology in an accessible, reader-friendly format that can be covered in about 12 months, this new edition contains roughly 50% new material, the cardiac pharmacology section has been completely reworked, cardiovascular trials have been included, and the entire book has been updated to reflect current practice guidelines and recent developments. The book is peppered throughout with numerous tables and clinical pearls that aid the student, as well as the teacher, to remain focused.
Mayo Clinic Cardiology is based on the original syllabus for the Mayo Cardiovascular Review Course, one of the premiere teaching courses in cardiology in the United States. The content evolves entirely from Mayo Clinic physicians and reflects the expert cardiovascular care provided, from common conditions to those that are very rare, even for tertiary referral centers.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :
Excellent, as expected
This book doesn't really need a review. If you are looking at it, you probably know that it is thorough, continuing a solid Mayo tradition into a new edition. The format is much the same, with an outline, text, and review of key points. Helpfully, each section has a short summary, printed over a light grey background, in order to stand out, so after reading a section, you can glance back through and remind yourself via these short summaries of what you have learned. If you don't remember the details, it provides a helpful reminder of what you need to study more.
The text has about the same level of depth than the ACCSAP 8, but does not have the extensive sample questions of that resource. Additionally, ACCSAP has larger print and is helpfully broken into smaller, lighter books which are easier to carry around to study from. It is helpful that the echocardiograms are not in Mayo format, but in the more widely accepted format for apical views. That being said, I think there's only one apical 4 chamber view in the book.
I do find that the ACCSAP is easier to read, with less "data density" per page. But once I have seen the material a few times, this is easier to use as a reference, without unnecessary explanation.
Overall, a solid one-volume source for board review and study, as a fellow this has been helpful to give me a grounding level of understanding, from which to proceed to more in-depth study. And when I take the board exam next year, this is going to be my capstone review material.
Great material easy read, good team with the Mayo Clinic Videos
I was reading the ACCSAP8 but decided to give this a try. The third edition is completely outdated but this version is spot on with current guidelines. Maybe there is some information with too much detail, then you just ignore it.
I am happy with the book but wish this came in PDF version. IT IS A PAIN TO CARRY THIS MONSTER AROUND! I am even thinking of ripping the book into 5 different sections because of how uncomfortable it is to read.
