Providing good care at night for older people

(點選圖片可預覽部份內容)

簡介(Book Description from WorldCat):
The experiences and needs of residents and patients in nursing and care homes are very different at night, and this is particularly true for those with dementia. Yet nursing and care homes are not always inspected with the same rigour at night as they are during the day, and night staff do not always receive the same levels of training, resources and supervision as day staff.
This book provides night staff and their managers with the knowledge and practical skills they need to deliver positive and appropriate care during the night. The authors look at all of the issues that are particularly pertinent in caring for older people at night, including nutrition and hydration, continence, challenging behaviour, medication, night-time checking, pain management and end-of-life care. They also look at the impact that working at night has on care staff, and offer practical advice to help them to safeguard their own health. The final chapter provides a set of night-time care guidelines for inspectors that can also be used by managers to evaluate night-time practices in their care homes.
This book is essential reading for night staff and their managers and employers, as well as inspectors of services, policy makers, and anyone else with an interest in the provision of care for older people.

Social enjoyment groups for children, teens and young adults with autism spectrum disorders

簡介(Book Description from Barnes & Noble):
Young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often feel uncomfortable and anxious in social situations, but socializing with classmates and colleagues can be made easier - and more enjoyable - with Guiding Toward Growth group sessions.
John Merges' simple yet effective program for teaching social enjoyment skills is based on the concept that there are ten hurdles that make it challenging for people with ASD to enjoy social interaction. This book guides the reader through planning, running, and assessing group sessions that have been designed to help participants overcome these hurdles, interact with confidence, and ultimately enjoy more independent and fulfilling lives. As social interaction is a vital element of any work environment, this book also teaches young adults with ASD an important employment skill.
This adaptable book can be used with a wide range of ages and communicative abilities, and will be an invaluable resource for all professionals working with groups of children and young people with ASD.

A strongly recommended pick for anyone in charge of educating autistic pupils
Friendship is something we all seek, and autism does not change that. "Social Enjoyment Groups: For Children, Teens, and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders" is a guide for encouraging growth of social groups for young people with autism, and how to form and run such groups effectively to encourage growth of such skills and lead to more independence in life, along with greater fulfillment. "Social Enjoyment Groups" is a strongly recommended pick for anyone in charge of educating autistic pupils.

How to Manual for Developing Social Groups for Teens with Autisn
I am with a non-profit that serves children with autism and increasingly we are seeing families who are seeking services for teens in our community. So many of our families are seeing that their teens do not have many friends and activities outside of school. They do well in a controlled environment but generalizing social skills to develop friendships is challenging. This book outlines in great detail exactly how to develop and manage a regular, weekly in-school or out of school social gathering for teens with autism whereby these individuals can practice social skills and develop friendships. In the end the idea is to help these teens become ready for the social side of working and living in the adult world. I like the detailed, specific ideas of how to run the groups. Good, practical advice. This will lend credibility to our program.

How to Be a Phenomenal Therapist - Hot Stone Massage and So Much More!
Have you ever received a hot stone massage? If you did, it was either one of the BEST experiences of your life or a terrible one, depending not only on the therapist's training, skill, tools but the quality of their touch.
If you use stones in any way, or want to learn, this it the BEST and most comprehensive book on the subject of hot stone therapies and massage, written by Leslie Bruder, the Master of Phenomenal Touch and Hot Stone Massage! Leslie brings her 25 years of skill and mastery into an easy to read format to help you understand the subject and broaden your therapies and skills. This book is visually appealing with great layout and dozens of beautiful full-color pictures in every chapter.
Maybe you are a massage therapist who already uses hot stones, or you are interested in learning one of the most popular modalities in the massage world. If you are a therapist you will learn how to use these wonderful tools to save your hands and increase your clientele and business. Maybe you are interested in using hot stone therapy in your work as a Reflexologist, Esthetician, energy worker or other body worker. Or maybe you want to work on your kids, partner, family and friends just for fun in a non-professional way.
This book covers every aspect of using stones for healing and bodywork from A-Z with great depth of information. This is a full comprehensive overview of the subject -- beginning with a history of how hot stones have been used around the world for spiritual use, healing, comfort and medicine, modern ways stones are used in the massage world, the understanding and use of different types of stones (metamorphic rock, basalt, quartzite, marble, jade), physiological effects of heat and cold on the body, proper stone temperature for using stones for massage as well as placement, using placement stones and layouts both on top of the client and under the client, using hot stones to actually massage muscles and melt tension and stress, many different techniques for using stones in a massage or bodywork session, contraindications for using hot (and cold) stones on clients, cautions and safety issues with stones, a system to manage the stones during the massage so you always have the right temperature stones when you need them, the best equipment to use, how to set-up your therapy room for an efficient working space, using essential oils in your work, resources and classes for hot stone therapies and much more.
The beautiful stones used in massage, bodywork and energy modalities are gifts to us from Mother Earth and we honor them. If you are exploring the energies of various stones, minerals, crystals and gemstones, you will learn the important aspects of incorporating this in your work - how to use their energy, how to clear and cleanse stones, gems and minerals, how to re-charge them in nature, how to bring them into your bodywork sessions in many creative ways.
As a good therapist, your knowledge, techniques and skill are the critical elements for a safe, flowing and effective massage or other bodywork session. But the heart of this book is about helping you become a Phenomenal therapist and body worker -- to help bring healing and transformation to your clients' stress and pain. The way you touch your client, friend or partner is so much more important than any technique -- your ENERGY and INTENT behind your touch. To be very clear, this is about loving, non-sexual, therapeutic touch that supports and nurtures another human being who is experiencing stress, pain, loneliness, anxiety or fear. This critical element of massage and bodywork is rarely taught in massage or bodywork schools, and is so lacking in massage (no matter what the price) -- as they focus solely on the technical aspects of the work, forgetting that touch also is about energy, Spirit, love and reverence.
In this book, Leslie introduces the major Principles of Phenomenal Touch® which WILL transform your work and your touch. Using these Principles brings a whole new focus to your sessions -- always being fully mindful and present with your client, reverence and honor for them, the way you start a stroke (entrance) and end it (exit), tuning in to use right amount of pressure and speed to meet the client's needs, following their breath, mindfulness of your words, creating a flow in your session, seamless transitions between your hands, the stones, the strokes, how to melt the muscle tissue, working a Three-Dimensional way, using proper body mechanics to save your hands, protect your own joints back and prevent carpal tunnel, bringing your self and your creativity to your work in new ways. Using The Principles of Phenomenal Touch will bring a higher level of awareness and transformation to your self, your clients, your business and the quality of your work in amazing ways.

Excellent Reference that You'll Read from Cover to Cover
I'm a new massage therapist, but have received many hot stone massages over the years. Some were wonderful, but others were uncomfortably hot in some areas of my body or just plain painful until I alerted the therapist to my feelings. If I follow the advice in Leslie Bruder's book, I can avoid those issues in my own practice.
Ms. Bruder doesn't just give sterile how-to advice -- she tells you how, of course, but also explains why certain techniques work best for the client and for the therapist. And it's obvious that she is writing from deep experience.
I would be here all day if I tried to outline the information you'll gather from this book. I'll take the short route and simply say, buy it if you want an in-depth text on hot stone massage. You won't be sorry.

Amazing!
Incredible! As a massage therapist, I found this book totally amazing.
Not only does it teach Hot Stone work, but hot stone work married to a three dimensional, heart-centered massage technique. The stones become wonderful extensions of the body -- allowing for profound work. The massage moves themselves are out of this world, and then adding the stones.
simply increases the effects a thousand fold. The details of choosing stones, working with them, keeping them at the right temperatures, knowing when they should be used, and when not to use them -- all this is covered in very readable language, approachable by the novice as well as the experienced bodyworker. And, SO MANY beautiful and helpful photos!
I can't imagine how wonderful it would have been to have been the "model"
in all those shots! In short, this is THE book about hot stone work.
It should be in every therapist's library.

Hot Stone Massage A Three-Dimensional Approach
Thank you so much,
I have learned so much from this book.
It is so easy to understand the applications of stones, safety tips for clients as well as therapist. The many pictures are so helpful to follow the techniques. Following the very clear instructions written in this book should bring a very safe and enjoyable experience for your clients. My clients have been so pleased with the added hot stone massage, and I credit this pleasure to the education I received from this book.
Five stars are not enough to grade this wonderful source of information.

Worth Every Penny!
I have just purchased the fabulous book 'Hot Stone Massage A Three Dimensional Approach'. It is certainly better than the book I have to study from which is 'The Official LaStone Therapy'. The wording is more clear and it reads so well. The technical wording in this book makes more sense to me and the stones are so amazing and colorful! I have been waiting for this book to arrive in the the UK since 1/1/09, so I am just so happy to have it in my hands.....It is worth every penny in my book! Well done!"

Unbelievable Book!!
Out of all the hot stone massage books I have read, this one by far surpasses them all! Not only is this book incredibly well written, accurate and thick with information, it also offers important and unique aspects of a hot stone massage not included in any other book or video, such as: how to massage the body on both sides at once; how to remove the stones from beneath the body without involving the client; and how to manage the stones throughout the massage in a fluid seamless fashion. It also includes entire chapters dedicated to important guidelines for using the stones; advanced techniques; and three-dimensional principles and massage strokes with detailed explanations of each. There is also useful and clearly written information about the physiology of heat and cold; each disease or condition that is contraindicated and why; an in-depth list of the many possible stones to use, as well as their geological origins; and a detailed list of all the equipment needed and not needed to give an efficient, flowing, artful hot stone massage. In addition, each chapter is loaded with defined key terms, tip and caution boxes, testimonials and an assortment of useful review questions. It closes with an appendix that includes charts on stone temperatures, sources for acquiring or purchasing sets of stones, instructors of this modality and books for further reading. And the icing on the cake is a step by step 9 page guided full body hot stone massage that leads you through everything you have just been taught in the book. As if this was not enough, this book is done is semi-glossy full color and includes 200 gorgeous photos! It is beautiful and artful and leaves no stone unturned. I found it very helpful, and I have been practicing hot stones for ten years. My husband is just learning and he found it to be very user friendly and powerful. It is simply amazing and I am very impressed. Thank you for writing it!

Wow ! A valuable tool !
This book is extremely well researched and presented. Bruder has taken the subject of hot stone therapy to a level that will assuredly become a standard on the subject. I was engaged with this text from page one. Color pages, photos and explicit descriptions of all the concepts and moves were a real bonus. The format of step by step information and then self evaluation and questions after each section make each concept progressively clear and understandable. An valuable addition to the library of the novice and professional alike.

Patient Review
I cannot imagine a more worthwhile book for a professional but as a patient, I found it wonderful in Knowing what to expect and what to ask my masseur to provide.
