The textbook is a comprehensive, expertly-written reference ideal for this fast-changing and multidisciplinary specialty. This first-of-its-kind text provides specialized instruction and best practices for wilderness EMS practitioners and students – crucial information for the success of today’s rescue missions. A strong foundation in evidence-based medicine, clinical experience, and field applicability makes it especially useful for any EMS provider in a wilderness environment.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
Great book for any level of provider in remote environments, written by an incredible team of experts, and has plenty of color diagrams and photos! Whether you have basic wilderness first aid training, advanced life support, or are more highly trained as a clinician, the chapters for handling different situations from environmental hazards, trauma injuries, rescues etc. are clearly broken down by provider level so you only need to focus on the section on what your skills can be applied toward. As a zoologist who works in the wilderness and has extensive wilderness medicine training, this book is now a valuable addition to my references. One of the chapters that stood out most to me was the chapter on animal bites and envenomation by Dr. Benjamin Abo. I was quite impressed with how in depth the epidemiology and treatment of venomous and nonvenomous bites was, and the background on different families of venomous snakes that you don't see in the average book of this kind. Another important note from that chapter was on the prevention of animal bites that includes understanding the behaviors of the species in which you may encounter so that you can pick up on warning signs to avoid negative interactions to begin with. The other chapter that stood out is a topic that is by far neglected when it comes to working in remote settings. It is about the mental health of individuals in response to such extreme situations and the mental health of those first responders in those situations. Laura McGladrey does well at diving into this difficult but important concept. Highly recommend!
✯✯✯✯✯
Great text and one that I will use extensively going forward. It is well organized and covers the gamut of EMS topics in the wilderness. I teach wilderness medicine to a number of audiences and this textbook will be very useful as it breaks down recommended clinical care by level of certification/knowledge (First Aid and Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support, and Clinician). It bridges the gap between pure wilderness medicine and EMS books and the more technical textbooks that I have on the shelf by discussing (in the technical rescue section) implications and difficulties of medical care in differing environments such as high angle, swiftwater, and open water environments.
✯✯✯✯✯
My goal in authoring chapter 7 on Wilderness EMT equipment was to provide the reader with a spectrum of advice highlighting both modern, highly back packable innovations, as well as tired-and-true improvisational techniques for the remote caregiver who must be self-reliant without the aid of modern transport support.

The reference is filled with the unique wisdom, experience and insight of long-time backcountry caregivers. It offers advice from professionals like myself (with fifty years of experience) as well as bright, new highly-trained and specialized outdoor experts, all of whom have come together to share their experience.

This is the first Wilderness EMS reference text enabling the reader to supplement their knowledge by harnessing the perspective of twenty Fellows of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, five Wilderness Medicine School Directors and two of the rare Master Fellows of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, Dr. Hawkins and I.
The editor Dr. Seth Hawkins has excelled in bringing together several uniquely-qualified, professional, full-time WEMS instructors such as myself for this purpose.
Finally, it’s important to note that the reference strives to provide perspectives from the more heavily populated Eastern United States as well as those from the more sparsely populated Western regions.

Learning DSM-5 by case example

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

With at least one case presentation for each of the mental disorders catalogued in DSM-5 -- and multiple cases for nearly half of the disorders -- Learning DSM-5(R) by Case Example has been meticulously designed to aid practitioners and students of all levels in psychology, psychiatry, social work, counseling, and psychiatric nursing develop internalized prototypes of DSM-5 disorders by first describing each disorder in relatable terms and subsequently illustrating how these symptom constellations manifest in real-life settings using clinical case material.
The nearly 200 cases featured in this guide are drawn from the authors' own clinical experience, as well as that of well over 100 clinicians, many of whom are well-known experts in particular areas of diagnosis and treatment. Sensitive to the fact that one of the hallmarks of mental disorders is the wide range of presentations that are encountered in a real-world setting, many of the disorders described include multiple cases that vary in symptom presentation, gender, age, clinical course, associated impairment in psychosocial functioning, and developmental factors, thus giving readers an appreciation for the heterogeneity typical of these disorders. Each case is complemented by a discussion that elaborates the ways in which the case conforms to the DSM-5 prototype or highlights those features of the case that illustrate the heterogeneity.
With definitions of potentially unfamiliar medical and psychiatric terms, Learning DSM-5(R) by Case Example is an accessible resource for readers of all disciplines. And because it guides the reader through the organizational structure of DSM-5, it is also an ideal reference for courses on psychopathology or abnormal psychology.

Surgical approaches to the facial skeleton

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

Publisher's Note: Products purchased from 3rd Party sellers are not guaranteed by the Publisher for quality, authenticity, or access to any online entitlements included with the product.

Highly regarded by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, otolaryngologists, and trainees in these fields, this unique title is a step-by-step, superbly illustrated guide to the surgical approaches used to expose the facial skeleton. More than 400 full-color surgical and cadaver photographs, as well as detailed line drawings, clearly depict the key anatomic structures and technical aspects of each approach, providing unsurpassed, detailed coverage of safe access to specific regions of the craniofacial skeleton.

Customer Reviews from Amazon :
✯✯✯✯✯
This book is an extremely well-organized and easy-to-understand guide to all of the commonly used approaches to the facial skeleton for anyone in plastic surgery, otolaryngology, oral-maxillofacial surgery, or neurosurgery. It contains VERY clear diagrams and explanations. There are only so many approaches to access the skeleton. Thus, this book is not very thick. Compared to the limited amount of content, the price is steep. However, it will provide an extremely clear and conscience reference or refresher for any practicing surgeon that deals with the face.

This review is specifically in regards to the 3rd edition which was released in 2018. The text is still the same as the second ed., however, the photography is excellent and supplemental videos are invaluable. Must have book as a resident!

Basics of psychotherapy

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

Today's psychotherapists come from many disciplines -- psychiatry, psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing, and a variety of counseling professions -- but they are united by a common goal: to deliver an effective therapeutic service to those in need. Psychotherapy texts usually focus on a single methodology or perhaps survey a variety of treatments. What many clinicians may need instead is an examination of the core principles, ideas, and practices that underlie and unify the hundreds of therapies in current use. Basics of Psychotherapy meets this need with a thorough examination of these common elements and of how they function to promote successful outcomes. The challenges to successful practice have never been greater: the demand for psychotherapy services often outstrips the supply, third-party and government payers continue to call for lower costs, computer-based therapies threaten to compete with human resources, and clinicians of all types confront the illusory appeal of using drugs to achieve quick fixes. In this difficult environment, successful practitioners must provide efficient and effective therapeutic results.Each central chapter takes up a fundamental topic and examines it in detail: - What is psychotherapy?- What is the psychotherapy relationship?- What is an initial evaluation?- What is a formulation?- What is a treatment plan?
Other chapters review the essential technical aspects common to any psychotherapy and provide valuable advice on how to deal with typical clinical challenges. Throughout the book, Dr. Makover emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic alliance -- what it is, what supports it, how to maintain it, how to repair it when necessary -- and the collaborative partnership between therapist and patient that must exist for any treatment to succeed. The book concludes with a discussion of career development and of how self-directed learning can build a collection of skills and capacities that will meet every practice challenge. Clinicians who understand the foundations of psychotherapy covered in this book will be more efficient and effective, regardless of which approach they chose to employ.
Basics of Psychotherapy is written in a clear, straightforward style that reads easily and conveys its ideas with engaging simplicity. Every point is skillfully illustrated by clinical examples. Scripted excerpts of therapy sessions not only reproduce the dialogue; they also contain notes and commentary that explain exactly what is happening between therapist and patient. Tables and illustrations summarize the topics explained in the text. This practical and up-to-date book should be of use to the beginning therapist and the experienced clinician alike.
