Corrective exercise solutions to common hip and shoulder dysfunctions

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):
Dysfunctions of the movement system are at the core of most cases of musculoskeletal injury, including (but not limited to) degenerative joint conditions, impingement syndromes, and chronic myofascial and joint pain. These movement impairments result in repetitive and cumulative microtraumas that affect individuals in their occupations and everyday activities, as well as in their attempts to be more physically active during exercise or recreational activities. Full of color photographs illustrating precise assessments, corrective strategies, and functional progressions, Common Exercise Solutions to Common Hip and Shoulder Dysfunction demonstrates how the fitness professional/clinician can apply the three principles of human movement - respiration, centration, and integration - to improve common movement dysfunctions of the hip and shoulder. This valuable resource presents: The three reasons why clients develop faulty movement patterns - so the fitness professional/clinician can understand and explain the mechanisms behind their clients' hip and shoulder dysfunctions. The concepts and strategies, including the real-world and clinical application, of the corrective exercise and integrative movement approach to common movement dysfunctions of the hip and shoulder - so the fitness professional/clinician has both the strategies and the tools to address their clients' hip and shoulder dysfunctions. An easy-to-implement, principle-based solution to common movement dysfunction of the hip and shoulder - so the fitness professional/clinician can expand their expertise as a movement specialist and become a part of the solution to the health care crisis.

Customer Reviews from Amazon :

Best resource out there
*DISCLAIMER* I am not a physical therapist...I have a connective tissue disorder, so my hips and shoulders are unstable. At age 27, my entire body started to fall apart. I am still trying to put it back together.
I have been through several physical therapists and they all seem to regurgitate the same information and do not address the entire body. Dr. Osar's approach is out of the box, but ironically, full of common sense. I would HIGHLY recommend this as a resource for anyone with winged scapulae. They are particularly hard to treat and traditional approaches to shoulder rehab will actually make you worse.

Functional Movement

As a woman in her late seventies who is active and works out, I found Evan Osar's book to be an excellent resource for all things related to body movement. The book is well-organized with lots of images and references to videos for ease in understanding. He covers basic principles of movement that I find helpful in my activities of daily living. He also describes specific exercises that I refer to on a regular basis because the format is so easy to follow:
"Key to Performance" tells me how to do the exercise.
"Client Sensation" tells me how I should be feeling.
Overall the book really speaks to me.
So if you are interested in fitness you will definitely like Evan Osar's book.

Great Book, Great Ideas, Poor book binding

I have had shoulder problems for some time now, i tried the tradition YTWL exercises, the wall angels (scapula wall slides), and many rotator cuff exercises but my pain still lingered. Evan Osar explains why despite these exercises being the go to exercises for many clinicians, they might not be the best approach for treating shoulder problems.
I am currently going through the exercise progressions outlined in the book. I have definitely felt some improvement, but I still have some residual pain. Perhaps i will update my review down the track, to let you guys know how everything goes.
I give the book 5 stars because of Dr Osar's unique approach to shoulder problems.
However the book is not perfect. I have a few issues:
-The pages of this book come out very easily because the binding is very poor!! You don't even have to use much force for the pages to come out! I have had to sticky tape many pages back together. The book is pretty ugly now but still useable.
-Instructions on how to perform an exercise are very brief and sometimes unclear. Dr Osar tends to have a picture for the start of the exercise and a picture for the end range of motion for the exercise. He does have videos online which are very useful. But many exercises do not have an accompanying video. Also he does not always mention how many sets and reps to use or advise you how often to train the exercises.
-The wording he uses can be difficult to understand for the layman. Being a health professional definitely helped me understand the book easier! If you are not a health professional, you may just need to invest more time into learning the anatomy and terminology he refers to.
If you know what these terms mean: posterior, flexion, extension, protraction, scapula, levator scapulae , latissimus dorsi, then you are half way to understanding the book.
However DR Osar has his own terms that you will need to learn: "Thoracopelvic cannister","co-activation","dissociation","centration"
All in all, a well thought out book with fresh ideas and a few niggly things that could be improved for the 2nd edition.

The Best Book for Healing Your Shoulder!!!

I am performing the crawling exercises recommended in this book, and it is healing my shoulder impingement rapidly. This is absolutely amazing ... who would have thought that simple crawling exercises would correct shoulder impingement and rotator cuff injuries! Apparently it works by neurologically remapping the brain to specific muscle movements through repetition. These crawling exercises were first developed by Dr. Vaclav Vojta in the 1950's and have been used ever since to treat babies born with cerebral palsy. Just think about it ... how did we first, as babies, develop correct functional movement and strength -- through crawling, of course! In my opinion, these crawling exercises are much more therapeutic than the traditional exercises that are prescribed for rotator cuff injury by physical therapists. On a side note, if you have pain in any part of your body (other than your shoulder), I highly recommend a book called "The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion (a yoga-based method). In two months, it cured the carpal tunnel, tennis elbow, and shoulder pain that I had suffered from for over 30 years. In reading the boook, I found that most pain in our bodies is caused by poor posture, prolonged sitting, and lack of exercise. "The Egoscue Method of Health Through Motion" helped me to correct all of my postural issues (a lower right shoulder, an elevated and torqued right hip, cartilage damage in my knees, over-pronating ankles, and fallen arches) in two months. Another book that I highly recommend is called "Movement: Functional Movement Systems" by Gray Cook, who prescribes crawling exercises to fix shoulder impingement.

A Must Have In Your Training Library

A streamlined protocol for understanding, assessing, and correcting common dysfunction in the shoulder and hip. Some of Dr. Osar's points will make you stop and think about some of the current movement patterns and there cues, and how they can actually be detrimental to long-term development and health.
In addition, I found the 'Developmental Movement Patterns' to be useful and currently integrate them with my athletes', as well as my own training.

MUST HAVE!!

This book is a MUST HAVE!! You don't have to be a fitness or health professional to utilize this book. Most of us are exercising and/or moving incorrectly. Dr. Osar, clearly and easily, explains how to perform every movement correctly. This resource NEEDS to be in the library of every individual who wants to move better. BUY THIS BOOK!!!
