Rational suicide in the elderly

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

This book provides a comprehensive view of rational suicide in the elderly, a group that has nearly twice the rate of suicide when chronically ill than any other demographic. Its frame of reference does not endorse a single point-of-view about the legitimacy of rational suicide, which is evolving across societies with little guidance for geriatric mental health professionals. Instead, it serves as a resource for both those clinicians who agree that older people may rationally commit suicide and those who believe that this wish may require further assessment and treatment. The first chapters of the book provides an overview of rational suicide in the elderly, examining it through history and across cultures also addressing the special case of baby boomers. This book takes an ethical and philosophical look at whether suicide can truly be rational and whether the nearness of death in late-life adults means that suicide should be considered differently than in younger adults. Clinical criteria for rational suicide in the elderly are proposed in this book for the first time, as well as a guidelines for the psychosocial profile of an older adult who wants to commit rational suicide. Unlike any other book, this text examines the existential, psychological, and psychodynamic perspectives. A chapter on terminal mental illness and a consideration of suicide in that context and proposed interventions even without a diagnosable mental illness also plays a vital role in this book as these are key issues in within the question of suicide among the elderly. This book is the first to consider all preventative measures, including the spiritual as well as the psychotherapeutic, and pharmacologic. A commentary on modern society, aging, and rational suicide that ties all of these elements together, making this the ultimate guide for addressing suicide among the elderly.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
An excellent and thoughtful scholarly review of a topic that is important clinically and from the standpoints of public health and public policy. I really enjoyed the different academic perspectives, e.g., philosophical, anthropological, in addition to various clinical perspectives. And I really appreciated Anthony Daniels’ epilogue, which provided an insightful summary that leaves unanswered the question of whether suicide in older adults can be rational. I thought that the several case examples helpful and interesting. In sum, this is a terrific read that is accessible to clinicians, academics and the lay public who care about this topic.

Customer Reviews from Amazon :

I actually think this is a very good textbook. It is straight-forward and very easy to read. It goes over basic anatomy and some basic physiology but you can skip these portions if you did well in those classes. It also has describes some diagnostic tests and diseases which is nice to see how these terms can be applied. Sections are broken down into the systems of the body (i.e., cardiovascular system, blood system, immune system, etc) and you learn the medical terms that apply to each accordingly. I only wish this book was offered in hard cover.

his book is amazing! Register for the free content that comes with the book. You can play all kinds of interactive games on there and it is a great tool to learn. The only thing that I didn't like about the book is that there are not all of the answers as you are building words, just the page numbers were you can find the separate roots and suffixes. Overall though this is a great buy. The whole book is set up like a workbook where you keep building on what you learn.

Neuroimaging in forensic psychiatry : from the clinic to the courtroom

簡介(Book Description from Barnes and Noble):
This important volume is the first to address the use of neuroimaging in civil and criminal forensic contexts and to include discussion of prior precedents and court decisions. Equally useful for practicing psychiatrists and psychologists, it reviews both the legal and ethical consideraitons of neuroimaging.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

Neuroimaging and Forensic Psychiatry
This book credibly fills a void in an important forensic area. It contains chapters on relevant subject areas written by an impressive collection of authors recognized as leaders in their research and publications. It is concisely written and comprehensible even to the lay reader.

This book is essential reading for all forensic psychiatrists and psychologists. It is also highly relevant and illuminating to general psychiatrists, psychologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists. It is a useful resource for prosecutors and criminal defense attorneys. It would serve as a practical reference for civil injury, disability and workers' compensation attorneys. It would be helpful to judges, prison/jail authorities and both parole and probation officers. The information in this book could assist medical, psychiatric and psychiatric treatment teams in penal institutions.

The text contains a though balanced discussion of the scientific data. There is direct analysis of the application of the science to critical legal issues.

The reader learns an awareness of the advances in the field which will eventually lead to more use in both civil and criminal cases. There is a provocative discussion of where science meets concepts of causation and criminal responsibility. One is left with a humbling appreciation of the complexity and limits of the field.

This book should be a required reading in any forensic teaching program. The value of this text will only increase over time as the science and its forensic applications expand.

Groundbreaking Science in the Interface of Law, the Brain and Neuroimaging

this book presents groundbreaking science at the interface of law and psychiatry. It is well presented and referenced. It is a must for any forensic psychologist/ psychiatrist. You cannot think about forensic cases any more without reference to neurolaw and this book opens new pathways to thinking about the interface and the benefits of neuroimaging for our clients and patients. The future is now.

Excellent professional resource

This book is both practical and has sufficient depth on all aspects of neuroimaging evidence. I am using it as a handbook but I think that it is also an excellent resource for the students at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Clinical and translational science

(點選圖片可預覽部份內容)

簡介
(Book Description from Google):
Clinical and translational science are fields devoted to investigating human health and disease, interventions, and outcomes for the purposes of developing new treatment approaches, devices, and modalities to improve health. New molecular tools and diagnostic technologies based on clinical and translational research have lead to a better understanding of human disease and the application of new therapeutics for enhanced health. This book is designed as the most authoritative and up-to-date resource for the broad range of investigators in various medical specialties taking on the challenge of clinical and translational science. Prepared with an international perspective, Clinical and Translational Science begins with experimental design and investigative tools to set the scene for readers. It then moves on to human genetics and pharmacology with a focus on statistics, epidemiology, genomic information, drug discovery and development, and clinical trials. Finally, legal, social, and ethical issues of clinical research are discussed concluding with a discussion of future prospects to provide readers with a comprehensive view of this developing area of science. * Discusses practical biological, physiological, cellular, and therapeutic applications for one of the fastest growing fields in private practice and academic medicine * Includes contributions from international leaders providing insight into background and future understanding for clinical and translational science * Presents the structure for complete instruction and guidance on the subject from fundamental principles, approaches and infrastructure to human genetics, human pharmacology, research in special populations, the societal context of human research, and the future of human research

Customer Reviews from Amazon:

極好Finally, a complete text for clinical trials
All medical fellows and especially PhD post-docs engaged in biological research should have this text. Whether or not, they think that their research will lead to a human clinical trial, this text describes in excellent detail how to think about tasks requisite to human experimentation. There is no other text which includes the arcana of human trials from designing experiements, to regulations, and even what documentation is needed to move a therapeutic regimen to market. While one would expect such a text to describe experimental design methods such as pharmacokinetics and sample size calculations, this text explores such topics as how to work with venture capitalists compared to private equity firms and philanthropic organizations. The book is lucidly written with great illustrations accompanying the text. Even the paper stock is pleasant to handle, which I find a rarity anymore. My only complaint, and it is minor, is that the order of the chapters does not seem to follow a logical sequence. Everything is there, but as I read the book from the beginning, I found chapters in the middle which I thought should have been in the earlier sections. While it is a minor complaint, I would suggest that a fellow should seek the advice of her specialty chief about which chapters to read first. The book could easily serve as a year-long text for a course in theory and conduct of clinical trials. From my 20+ years of experience as a principal investigator and executive of a clinical trials firm, I would require this text for everyone participating in human trials. I only wish I had this text 30 years ago when I was a fellow, it would have saved me a lot of time wandering in the confusing miasma of science and regulations conducting clinical trials.

極好A great introduction to this field
I really like this book because it's the only one I've found that really surveys and explains what clinical and translational science is all about. This "new discipline" resembles what used to be called medical research in human beings, but now it has become much broader, in order to overcome two gaps (T1 and T2) that stood in the way of progress. Clinical and Translational Science reaches all the way from the basic science laboratory, across the "Translational 1" (T1) gap to testing in patients and then across the "Translational 2" (T2) gap to introduction into public health and community engagement. The book provides an excellent introduction to the essential disciplines that enable the student to come away with a very complete picture of how medical research happens ... what is required to make discoveries, how to carry them into clinical trials, how to navigate the regulatory and bioethical environment, and how to take discoveries into the community. Everyone involved in the medical discovery process, clinical research, the drug industry, or public health will need to have this book. If you're interested in a career in medical research, I think this is the place to start.

極好Outstanding Contribution
An outstanding primer on clinical and translational research by renowned experts in the field. Comprehensive and well written, this book is a much needed addition to the literature on this timely subject. Anne Klibanski, M.D.

The psychiatrist as expert witness

(點選圖片可預覽部份內容)

簡介(Book Description from Google):
"The Psychiatrist as Expert Witness," Second Edition, by Thomas G. Gutheil, M.D., is a highly readable and practical update of his successful first edition. The focus of the new volume is to guide readers to become, improve, and successfully market a career as a psychiatric expert witness. A professor of psychiatry at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Gutheil draws on his decades of experience in the courtroom and countless beginner's mistakes to help readers avoid pitfalls. While of great value to newcomers to the field, the book offers insights and guidance to early-career and seasoned expert witnesses alike.
This volume has been extensively revised and updated from the first edition, which has been used in nearly all forensic psychiatric training programs in the United States and Canada. As in the first edition, this volume explores the role of the expert witness, moral issues, basic principles, depositions and trials, writing for the court, and ethical marketing. In addition, it includes a glossary, expanded definitions of key concepts, a lengthened discussion of bias in testimony, new illustrative examples, a model consent form for forensic examination, and cases that have arisen since the first edition.

Customer Reviews from Amazon:

極好A classic text, newly updated
A classic work which explores the nuances of translating clinical acumen into testifying as a court qualified expert. Now updated and deepened.
Highly recommended reading for any clinician whose dedication to community service includes courtroom testimony in areas of forensic expertise.

極好A Classic "Must-Have" for Expert Witnesses
Don't miss this gem! The 1998 edition became a standard text in courses on forensic psychiatry & psychology, expert testimony, etc., and this new 2009 second edition is even better. Providing careful attention to ethical, professional, legal, and practical issues, it provides wise and thoughtful guidance by one of the giants in the field. It also provides forms (informed consent for forensic assessment; financial agreement with an attorney; etc.) that can be adapted to specific areas of forensic practice.

How doctors think(中譯本:醫生,你確定是這樣嗎?)

簡介:
Jerome Groopman, a regular essayist for The New Yorker, examines the oft-neglected subject of the underlying psychology that drives doctors to make decisions--and to make mistakes! In a society where doctors are revered as nearly godlike and patients regularly receive their diagnosis with total faith, this account, which includes the honest appraisals of numerous physicians (including himself), is certainly eye-opening.
