Microbiology in your pocket

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

Microbiology in Your Pocket: Quick Pathogen Review by Melphine Harriott is a concise guide to common and rare bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that begins with pathogens that infect the nervous system and ends with pathogens infecting multiple organs. The presentation of material by organ system facilitates easy organization and provides versatility of use.
Each card presents similar information with variations due to inherent pathogen differences. On the front is an introduction to each pathogen with clinical vignettes and images. The back provides the taxonomy or morphology, infections, pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment options, and an explanation.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
As a second-year medical student preparing to take USMLE STEP 1, I cannot over-emphasize how pivotal these flash cards have been in my preparation… I only wish I had known about them sooner! I really like that they are organized/color-coded by pathogen type (Gram (-) = purple, Gram (+) = pink etc.) and organ system. Each card contains a clinical vignette as well as an explanation on the reverse side. The reverse side of each card contains a description of the organism, the type of infections it may cause, information about its life cycle, as well as how to diagnose and treat it. Talk about everything you need all in one place! The pictures are high quality and the book even comes with an online companion website with animations. You can tell that the author really took the time to develop a study tool truly unlike anything on the market. Dare I say they are even more high yield than Sketchy Micro? (In my opinion, YES!).

✯✯✯✯✯
As a current medical student, it only took me a few pages to realize that this is truly a great resource for someone preparing for an upcoming board exam! The layout of each page is succinct and easy to navigate, and the booklet is organized by systems-based chapters that helps group organisms together cohesively while studying. The detail I like the most is the cross-referencing to other organisms and infections, because comparing/contrasting similar information is constantly a challenge. There are online animations as well, which keep things simplified and hit the major concepts quickly. I highly recommend this awesome resource to other students!

A very nice companion to any larger, heavier hardback pharmacotherapy/pharmacology textbook. Much easier to carry with you if you're on the go but need to bring along a written pharm book. Pleased with purchase.

This is great for therapeutics classes. You study the material than read the chapters in the book to review. It’s also a great reference on rotations, because the chapters and concise and only a few pages long.

Top Score for the Radiology Boards

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

Top Score for the Radiology Boards: Q & A for the Core and Certifying Exams is the ideal diagnostic radiology board prep resource. Written by radiologist Alan Weissman, with contributions from dozens of leading experts at renowned institutions, Top Score has a simple ambition: to improve your test scores.
The book covers all exam categories, including non-interpretive skills (NIS), physics, safety, breast, cardiac, diagnostic radiology, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, interventional, musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, nuclear, pediatrics, thoracic, ultrasound/reproductive/endocrinology, vascular, and general radiology.
Chapters are composed of four types of test cases of varying focus and complexity, each on a two-page spread.
Essentials
starts with a patient presentation, followed by board-type multiple-choice questions. Details begins with a case presentation, followed by 10 rapid-fire questions, enabling brisk, high-volume learning. Image Rich presents multiple images that require accurate identification, enabling accelerated, high-volume image assessment practice. More Challenging follows the same format as Essentials but adds a higher degree of difficulty.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone studying for the boards. Although there is some overlap between the core and the certifying exams, there are also concrete differences, and this book does a great job in cross-covering the critical material. It is a nice addition to the review books already out there. Cases are written in a user-friendly and succinct format. 2 pages per case. The image-rich questions are nice because they show you at least four diagnoses per case. The details questions are good for the minutia. Some of the more challenging questions are pretty tough! Also, I like that the authors decided to put the questions on the left and the answers on the right (that way, I don’t have to keep flipping pages back and forth). I don’t know why most books don't do it that way. Well worth the money.

✯✯✯✯✯
Very useful! Reviewing cases is the best way to prepare for the boards. This book has excellent organization and offers a nice variety of cases. In addition to the standard diagnostic sections, it has a couple of extras, like physics and artifacts. The image-rich cases are particularly worthwhile. I really like how they give us “Top Tips” in the bottom right hand corner of every case, and I am sure that I will be reviewing those tips at crunch time.
This book is definitely geared for board preparation, but also gives recommendations on real life problems that you will see in your practice. Overall, I think this is a great tool for board preparation. High yield.

Dermo neuro modulating

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

DermoNeuroModulating is a structured, interactive approach to manual therapy that considers the nervous system of the patient from skin cell to sense of self. Techniques are slow, light, kind, intelligent, responsive and effective. Positioning of limbs and trunk affects deeper nerve trunks (by shortening and widening their container), and is
combined with skin stretch directed toward cutaneous fields of nerves that branch outward into skin (which may draw neural structure further through its
container).
It is prudent to remember that manual handling of a patient’s physicality is only a small part of developing a complete therapeutic context for change—while
optional, it can also be optimal.
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
DNM is a manual therapy approach which seems to be most consistent with modern pain science. As a Hellerwork Structural Integration practitioner I worked for years under the assumption that I was changing the structure of the body by manipulating fascia. Most research now refutes the idea that we can have any direct effect on structure whatsoever. Hellerwork is effective bodywork. That is not being questioned. The explanatory model however is incorrect it seems. Diane Jacobs is advancing the idea that none of us have ever effected any kind of change in the body through anything but the nervous system. By touching skin, we are connecting through the cutaneous nerves to the central nervous system and this communication is what helps the "patient" shift. She quite clearly lays out a new approach to working with another human being. The model is shifted from therapist as operator to therapist as interactor. This is an extraordinarily humanistic approach to therapy which helps build self-efficacy in the patient which is the most important factor in assuring change. This book is absolutely essential for every manual therapist.

✯✯✯✯✯
This should be required reading for anyone using their hands to help people in pain.
I've followed Diane's writings online and attended her course in person. This book takes all the best of her ideas and puts them in a very easy reading format, but at the same time includes copious references. For those that have attended Diane's course, the treatment section is very nearly identical to what is included in the more recent editions of the DNM course manual. But even having several variations on the manual I find the book (ebook in my case) to be a valuable addition. The beginning of the book gives an overview of principles, including numerous clinical pearls. For those that just want to learn enough to put this manual therapy framework "to work", the information in the beginning chapters will likely satisfy this desire. But I highly suggest reading to the end, as the principles are all repeated, in greater detail. The repetition increases and deepens understanding which is really what learning DNM is about. Understanding the enormous complexity of the pain experience and how all facets of an evaluation and treatment encounter can have effects on a person's experience, ranging from subtle to enormous. Thank you Diane!

The bright hour

簡介(Book Description from Amazon):

The poet Nina Riggs was 38 years old and living with her young family in Greensboro, North Carolina when doctors discovered a small spot of cancer in her breast. What at first seemed easily treatable turned out not to be, and she found herself in what Montaigne – the writer she turns to for wisdom -- called “suspicious country”: a place where death might be just around the corner. In The Bright Hour, the book Riggs wrote during her ultimately terminal illness, she maps that country, determined to see what is lovely in the landscape: her sweet, expressive little boys, her husband, who is honest and funny whenever possible, and her circle of family and friends, some of whom are also going through treatment for cancer. Riggs’s great-great-great grandfather was the poet-philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson (referred to here as RWE for short) and Riggs herself displays a formidable gift for language and a light but honest touch with the often -- but not always -- dark emotions evoked by her situation. To call a book so lovely and sad this year’s When Breath Becomes Air, would not be inaccurate, but would not do it justice. --Sarah Harrison Smith, The Amazon Book Review
Customer Reviews from Amazon :

✯✯✯✯✯
This is simply one of the most magnificent memoirs I've read in years. Even all the starred reviews and raving newspaper reviews' praises doesn't do The Bright Hour justice. I plan to give this book to loved ones for years to come and ordered a few extra copies to donate to our local cancer resource center at Providence. What a treasure this amazing woman has left behind. Don't miss this book.

✯✯✯✯✯
Nina Riggs' memoir, "The Bright Hour: A Memoir of Living and Dying" can be compared to "When Breath Became Air", by Dr Paul Kalanithi, which was published in 2016. Both were written by late-30's year olds who were facing the end of their lives with quiet fortitude and a sense of spirit. Both realised their coming deaths from cancer was the cruel reality that only few people ever have to face. Riggs and Kalamithi both wrote beautiful books that were "finished" after their deaths by their loving spouses.

Nina Riggs was in her mid-thirties when a small lump was found in her breast. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy and radiation in an attempt to stop the progress. She was from a family whose "tree" was riddled with cancer; her mother died shortly before she did from multiple-meyloma. Riggs helped nurse her mother but also nursed herself. As the mother of two young sons, Riggs and her husband, John, had the tough case of keeping things together, but also facing the future together.

How does one stay calm in the face of the diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer? Nina Riggs turned to her writing and began a blog, which developed into this book. As the great, great, great granddaughter of Ralph Waldo Emerson, she used his writing to help her approach to living and dying. She also turned to the writing of French Philosopher Michel de Montaigne, who popularised the essay as a literary genre. Most of Riggs' book is done in short essays. All told, Nina Riggs wrote beautifully before her untimely death.
