Fertility and pregnancy

簡介(Book Description from WorldCat):
Fertility and Pregnancy: An Epidemiologic Perspective, is a lively overview of human reproduction: how it works, and what causes it to go wrong. Weaving together history, biology, obstetrics, pediatrics, demography, infectious diseases, molecular genetics, and evolutionary biology, Allen Wilcox brings a fresh coherence to the epidemiologic study of reproduction and pregnancy. Along the way, he provides entertaining anecdotes, superb graphs, odd tidbits and occasional humor that bring the topic to life.
The book is divided into two sections. The first lays the foundations - the basic principles of reproductive physiology, demography, infectious diseases, and genetics as they apply to human reproduction. The second part deals with the endpoints of reproductive epidemiology - a spectrum ranging from infertility and fetal loss to birth defects and the delayed effects of fetal exposures. The book closes with a discussion of unsolved problems, suggesting possible research projects for a new generation of epidemiologists. An extensive glossary makes this a valuable reference as well as an enjoyable read.

Customer Reviews from Amazon :

Reliable, understandable information
I found this book to be a great resource for information on fertility and pregnancy and believe it would be helpful for anyone who would like to know about results from current research as well as how and why those investigations were done. The author explains and reviews research on reproduction, provides details on key studies, and helps the reader interpret the results. Although the book is a scholarly presentation of epidemiological studies, it provides readable information understandable to a lay person. I not only found answers to my questions in the book but also felt I had an understanding of how and why conclusions were reached.

Outstanding report on fertility & pregnancy

Allen Wilcox has written an oustanding review of the incredibly complex events that unfold to produce a viable pregnancy and healthy baby with fascinating coverage of historical events. This book is a wonderful addition to the library of interested researchers and public health teachers; the material should be discussed in classes for young women of childbearing age.
