Microbiology in Your Pocket: Quick Pathogen Review by Melphine Harriott is a concise guide to common and rare bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites that begins with pathogens that infect the nervous system and ends with pathogens infecting multiple organs. The presentation of material by organ system facilitates easy organization and provides versatility of use.
Each card presents similar information with variations due to inherent pathogen differences. On the front is an introduction to each pathogen with clinical vignettes and images. The back provides the taxonomy or morphology, infections, pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention, treatment options, and an explanation.

As a second-year medical student preparing to take USMLE STEP 1, I cannot over-emphasize how pivotal these flash cards have been in my preparation… I only wish I had known about them sooner! I really like that they are organized/color-coded by pathogen type (Gram (-) = purple, Gram (+) = pink etc.) and organ system. Each card contains a clinical vignette as well as an explanation on the reverse side. The reverse side of each card contains a description of the organism, the type of infections it may cause, information about its life cycle, as well as how to diagnose and treat it. Talk about everything you need all in one place! The pictures are high quality and the book even comes with an online companion website with animations. You can tell that the author really took the time to develop a study tool truly unlike anything on the market. Dare I say they are even more high yield than Sketchy Micro? (In my opinion, YES!).

As a current medical student, it only took me a few pages to realize that this is truly a great resource for someone preparing for an upcoming board exam! The layout of each page is succinct and easy to navigate, and the booklet is organized by systems-based chapters that helps group organisms together cohesively while studying. The detail I like the most is the cross-referencing to other organisms and infections, because comparing/contrasting similar information is constantly a challenge. There are online animations as well, which keep things simplified and hit the major concepts quickly. I highly recommend this awesome resource to other students!
