Gabbard's treatments of psychiatric disorders

簡介(Book Description from Google):
First published in 1989 and already a staple of psychiatric practice through three editions, "Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders" has been thoroughly revised to reflect modern clinical expertise in a more accessible volume. More than 160 authorities share insights gained from firsthand experience in a state-of-the-art text that covers all major treatments in psychiatry linked to specific disorders, with a pluralistic approach that includes all major treatment modalities without focusing exclusively on favorite approaches. Not only has each chapter been completely updated, the text has been reorganized to facilitate its publication in a single volume that cuts directly to the heart of disorder-based treatments.
Scrupulously reviewed to consolidate treatment information most needed by readers, the book is organized along the lines of DSM-IV-TR to cover the entire spectrum of conditions: disorders of childhood; cognitive disorders; substance-related disorders; psychotic disorders; mood disorders; anxiety, dissociative, and adjustment disorders; somatoform and factitious disorders; eating disorders; personality disorders; sleep disorders; and disorders of impulse control. Empirically validated treatments for each disorder are summarized; where empirical data are lacking, the contributors' clinical wisdom is brought to bear to advise the reader how to approach a particular condition. This fourth edition features a number of significant enhancements. Coverage of dementia has been expanded to reflect the disorder's increasing incidence, especially in Alzheimer's disease and cerebrovascular illness. Material on substance abuse disorders is organized so that problems with individual drugs and certain common treatment modalities are given separate chapters, with sections within each chapter written by separate authors who are experts on that particular topic. Coverage of schizophrenia reflects research of the past decade demonstrating the importance of the cognitive characteristics and sequelae of the illness and outlining the domains and molecular targets of intervention. The section on eating disorders has been streamlined to four chapters covering intensive treatments, psychopharmacological treatment, evidence-based and innovative psychological treatments, and family and marital therapy. The chapters on personality disorders reflect important recent advances: longitudinal research showing that such disorders undergo substantial improvements; the growing recognition that personality disorders have significant genetic determination; and the manualization of psychoanalytic psychotherapy to permit testing and replication.
"Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders" is an essential touchstone for practitioners and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions. Particular care in streamlining its revision has helped make this fourth edition an even more useful clinical tool for day-to-day practice.

The psychiatrist as expert witness

簡介(Book Description from Google):
"The Psychiatrist as Expert Witness," Second Edition, by Thomas G. Gutheil, M.D., is a highly readable and practical update of his successful first edition. The focus of the new volume is to guide readers to become, improve, and successfully market a career as a psychiatric expert witness. A professor of psychiatry at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Gutheil draws on his decades of experience in the courtroom and countless beginner's mistakes to help readers avoid pitfalls. While of great value to newcomers to the field, the book offers insights and guidance to early-career and seasoned expert witnesses alike.
This volume has been extensively revised and updated from the first edition, which has been used in nearly all forensic psychiatric training programs in the United States and Canada. As in the first edition, this volume explores the role of the expert witness, moral issues, basic principles, depositions and trials, writing for the court, and ethical marketing. In addition, it includes a glossary, expanded definitions of key concepts, a lengthened discussion of bias in testimony, new illustrative examples, a model consent form for forensic examination, and cases that have arisen since the first edition.

Customer Reviews from Amazon:

極好A classic text, newly updated
A classic work which explores the nuances of translating clinical acumen into testifying as a court qualified expert. Now updated and deepened.
Highly recommended reading for any clinician whose dedication to community service includes courtroom testimony in areas of forensic expertise.

極好A Classic "Must-Have" for Expert Witnesses
Don't miss this gem! The 1998 edition became a standard text in courses on forensic psychiatry & psychology, expert testimony, etc., and this new 2009 second edition is even better. Providing careful attention to ethical, professional, legal, and practical issues, it provides wise and thoughtful guidance by one of the giants in the field. It also provides forms (informed consent for forensic assessment; financial agreement with an attorney; etc.) that can be adapted to specific areas of forensic practice.

Customer Reviews from Amazon:

極好A great book with wealth of information well written
Most people would compare this book with Kaplan's CTP. In general, quite similar in coverage. The tone of this book seems more scientifically oriented while Kaplan's often has more historical sentiment. This book has less illustrations but makes more sense when illustrating, while the Kaplan's sometimes gives unnecessary figures appeared just for the sake of decoration (ex. a photo from a drama movie showing POW tortured under Stalin's picture was used to illustrate the term brain wash). Nonetheless, both books are written by many hands therefore the representation of many experts in the field. I tend to like this one due to its right to the point style without lingering too much on the mumbling chatting side. I think this book is easier to read. The information is balanced and authoritative as one should expected. An alternative is the Oxford textbook. Given the volume to hold and its reference nature, digital or online version also makes a lot of sense.

Customer Reviews from Amazon:

極好long time cancer survivor
As a 33 year survivor of Hodgkins Disease I purchased this book as a resource to help my physicians understand the late effects I might be experiencing and the best ways to treat those effects. It is a GREAT, very comprehensive aid, written more for health care professionals but there is enough in there for the lay person to make it worthwhile.

極好Filled with complete and comprehensive and up to date research on drug interaction
The wrong mixture of over the counter drugs can be fatal, and doctors and pharmacists must be aware of these lethal combos. "Clinical Manual of Drug Interaction Principles for Medical Practice" is a scholarly work discussing this very real possibility that can be prevented with the right research and foresight. With the hundreds upon hundreds of new drugs entering the market every year, the research into this subject is now invaluable, as it could save thousands of lives. Filled with complete and comprehensive and up to date research on drug interaction, "Clinical Manual of Drug Interaction Principles" is strongly recommended for community and college library medicine collections.

極好Outstanding Reference
This is the gold standard for drug interactions and should be part of any prescriber's reference set. Meticulously researched, it is the most up to date synopsis of the expanding field of drug metabolism and interactions. The material can be a bit dense at times, but this is also the nature of the topic.
